An electric fence can be used to keep your livestock contained in a certain area, protect your livestock from predators, protect your crops from predators, and keep small animals out of your garden.
In order to install an electric fence you will need electric fence wire, electric rope, or polytape, fence insulators, corner insulators, electric fence energisers, a hammer, wire cutters, and earthing or a grounding rod. For an electric fence to work there are 4 main components which are an energiser whether battery or mains, conducting lines which can be nets, polytape, wire polyrope, or twine, insulations, and an earth stake. Since you can choose various types of electric fencing supplies, you will need to know exactly what you plan to use in order to purchase all the materials needed.
Before you begin, you will need to know the size of the area you wish to fence in so you can purchase all the necessary electric fencing supplies at one time. In most cases, when you are installing an electric fence it is recommended that the posts be placed around 4 to 5 meters apart unless the ground is undulating then you will need more posts. On average for ½ acre with 45 metres across and 180 circumferences, you will need 9 posts across, 36 posts all around and 1 reel of tape or rope. If you plan to use electric netting, you will need 4 nets.
Going up the scale for 5 acres, 140 metres across with a 570 circumference you will need 28 posts across, 114 posts all around, 3 reels of tape or rope, or 12 nets.
Remember this is an estimate you may want more strands of electric fence than the above includes. Usually if you are using electric fence along with wood you will need no more than two strands of electric wire, however, if only using wire or tape you may need as many as four strands. You should talk with an expert at the store where you purchase your electric fencing supplies to ensure you purchase enough wire or polytape.
The easiest electric fencing to install is either the nets or electric tape; however, if you have a huge area you more than likely will wish to use wire polyrope or wire. Remember the corner posts need to be stronger than the line posts with insulators on each posts and an electric fence energiser that will be enough power to adequately send power for the entire fence.
The earth rod will need to be placed close to the energiser while leaving 1 to 2 inches above ground in order to attach the grounding wire.
No matter what size electric fence you need whether you need a paddock fence, a farm fence, electric horse fencing, or a small electric fence for your garden knowing exactly what is needed before you begin is the best answer. Do not start a project until you have done your homework and have read all the instructions.
